Through the Looking Glass has received additional government funding to continue offering this wonderful service to families. The current program is in it's final stages and will be ending in June 2009.
Through the Looking Glass
Through the Looking Glass is a free, government funded parenting program based at the Lady Gowrie Quarry Street and Love Street Child Centres. The program is designed to help strengthen relationships between parents and their children. It is for any parent who would like some extra support with their parenting and would like to gain a better understanding of their children's needs and behaviour. The program aims to provide support and child care as a package for families with children aged 0-5 to help develop richer relationships.
What's Involved?
Through the Looking Glass provides:
- 2 days a week child care at either the Lady Gowrie Quarry Street or Lady Gowrie Love Street Child Centre for up to 26 weeks, free to families with full Child Care Benefit entitlement (for families not entitled to 100% CCB, the payment of the gap fee will be negotiated with the parents)
- An 18 week group program for mothers, 2 hours per week, run by a Social Worker and the Long Day Care Program Director
The Group Program:
- Helps parents to deal with the everyday struggles of parenting
- Provides information and resources
- Helps parents develop new skills, learn about the issues that impact on their parenting and develop confidence in their parenting ability
- Increases parents' knowledge of child development
How Do I Get Involved?
Any families with children aged 0-5 are eligible for referral to the program. Families who would like to become involved can make a self referral by contacting the clinician, Lisa Crawford. Families may also be referred through any organization or community agency that is currently supporting them. Following an initial assessment by the clinician, families are invited into the program subject to there being child care places available.
Being part of a government funded project, all participants are asked to complete some questionaires. This assists in gathering evaluation data for the program to ensure that we are succeeding in helping families.
